Habitat: Steppes, meadows, pastures, and forest edges.

Diet: Grasses, weeds, clover, and alfalfa.  At the zoo: big game chow, honey treat, and hay.

Fun Facts:

  • They are deep hibernators, and may sleep up to 9 months of the year!  (In Southern areas it may only hibernate 6-8 weeks).
  • The eye sight and hearing are very well developed!
  • The woodchuck is sometimes considered a pest because of its raids on crops, and the hazards posed by its burrows to farm machinery, livestock, or irrigation systems!
  • They also destroy undesirable weeds!
  • The life span is about 5-6 years in the wild and about 10 years in captivity!
