- The Sicilian donkey is a miniature breed of domestic donkey, standing only 28-38 inches tall at the withers. This particular breed is noted for a cross-shaped marking along the back beginning at the base of the neck.
- Bred to be work animals, the donkey is valued for its few needs, cautiousness and bravery. The miniature breed of this species was bred smaller to fit on narrow winding paths through the mountains.
- Sicilian donkeys are considered to be docile and intelligent, and are known for their sweet, affectionate disposition. They can be used to protect sheep from wild dogs and are often used in rehabilitation work with mentally retarded or disabled children.
- Donkey's milk contains more sugar and protein than cow's milk and was once considered valuable for infants and the infirm. Their skin has been used for parchment and was at one time more valuable than any other kind.
- They are highly resistant to disease and remain healthy even into old age, reaching ages of up to forty years.
