- The African Pygmy Hedgehog is a hybrid of the four-toed hedgehog and the Algerian hedgehog and is only found in captivity.
- Hedgehogs are primarily nocturnal. They rely on their sense of smell and hearing
- Their spiny coats are great defense. They have few predators including large owls, and badgers. Dogs and foxes can occasionally overcome the spines.
- Roads are a major cause of death for hedgehogs. Half of all deaths are caused by cars.
