- When there is a lack of food, they may bury themselves and remain dormant until extreme conditions pass.
- When intimidated, they will flatten their bodies, puff their chin and open their mouths.
- Their body color may lighten or darken depending on mood or surroundings.
- Both males and females have beards, or expandable throat pouches, which they will display during mating or territory disputes.
