Summer Adventure Camps 2008

Zoo camps offer a unique opportunity to learn about animals through hands-on exploration, games, art and crafts. Choose from half-day, full-day or week long camps. Participants should dress for the weather, as adventures will be held rain or shine.
Rates:

Morning sessions are from 9am - noon. Afternoon sessions are from 1pm - 4pm. Full day sessions are from 9am - 3pm. Full day participants should bring a lunch or plan to purchase lunch at the Safari Café. Please, no parents or siblings in program unless registered as a participant. If visiting zoo grounds while waiting for a class in progress, please pay at admissions.
Animal Alphabet- 1.5 hour class $12 members, $15 non-members

A is for African hedgehog, B is for Brown Bear. Come learn about animals from A to Z! Children will make and take home their own animal ABC book.

Art in Animals – Half-Day Week Camp
:
There are many exciting elements that can be discovered through careful observation of the world around us. Animals interact with their environment using a variety of skills. Wild webs, nifty nests and crazy colors! Animals use a variety of shapes, patterns and colors to survive. Come explore the world of amazing animal artists! Professional art instruction by Snoodle Ceramic Studio. Clay work will be kiln fired and painted on the last day of class.

Sensational Senses- Half Day Week Camp:
Animals rely on different senses to help them survive. During this week long camp we will be learning about the 5 different senses and how some animals depend on one more than the others.

Animal Defenses – Half Day :
From porcupines to poison dart frogs, all animals have some kind of defense. Campers will learn different ways that animals protect themselves.

Zoo Moves – Half Day :
Jump like a kangaroo, pounce like a cougar, fly like a hawk or slither like a snake. We will explore how animals move, what they eat, and how they live in their environment.

Wet & Wild- Half Day :
Oceans, lakes, streams and rivers not only provide us with wondrous places to relax and enjoy nature, but also are essential to all living things for survival. So don’t be a drip, drop into the zoo to find out all about Earth’s most valuable resource and explore which animals live in or near the water.

Scutes, Scales and Slippery Skin - Half Day :
Slither and slide your way into the secretive world of reptiles and amphibians. Discover the differences between these animals and what they can tell us about our environment. You’ll see a variety of reptile and amphibian ambassadors as you discover some of the amazing adaptations these sleek, scaly critters possess.

Adaptations Around Town- Full Day Week Camp :
You loved it so much we brought it back again this year! Join us for a week out on the town. This camp is a unique opportunity to visit your zoo, aquarium, nature center, and harbor all in one week! Animals are everywhere as we begin our safari at the zoo. Next we’ll dive into an underwater adventure at the Great Lakes Aquarium. Then it’s off to Hartley Nature Center for some animal tracking in the forest. Lastly, we’ll treat ourselves to a sailing expedition with the Duluth Superior Sailing Association.

Zookeeper For A Day – Full Day :
Taking care of zoo animals involves a variety of tasks that are important to the health and well-being of each animal. This is a truly hands-on adventure. You will learn about animal nutrition, behavior, and become a vet detective!

Trainer for a Day - Full Day :
Join our seal trainers to find out why we train animals! Training is a growing career in zoos. From seals to bears to llamas, learn what we do at the Lake Superior Zoo. You’ll view training sessions, learn training concepts, play training games and apply what you have learned to some zoo animals!
