The Lake Superior Zoo takes
seriously its commitment to the
preservation of some of the rarest animals on earth. At the present time the zoo houses
eleven species of reptiles, birds, and mammals classified as endangered. These include the
American Desert Tortoise, Siberian Tiger, Snow Leopard, Cotton-top Tamarin, Goeldi's
Monkey (Callimico), Angolan Colobus Monkey, Red-Ruffed Lemur, Ring-Tailed Lemur,
Black-footed Ferret, Goral (a goat-like animal from the Himalayan mountains) and
White-naped Cranes.
The zoo houses nineteen species of animals classified as threatened. A few of these are
the Peregrine Falcon, Blue and Gold Macaw, Polar Bear, Fennec Fox, and
Western Grey Kangaroo.
The Lake Superior Zoo is an active
participant in ten national programs
(Species Survival Plans) involving husbandry management and breeding of some of the most
endangered animals in the world.
Through its involvement in exhibiting, managing, and occasionally breeding these
living treasures, the Lake Superior Zoo is demonstrating its commitment to our worldwide
