The Willard Munger Animal Care Center
was completed in spring of 2001, it provides
more than 450 animals in the zoo, the keepers, and the veterinary team with the finest facility possible.
This new facility is being funded by a $1.3 million grant from the State of
Minnesota Bonding Bill. Like so many other projects at the zoo, Willard Munger was
instrumental in securing the necessary funds.
The Lake Superior Zoo formally named the new Animal Care Center in honor of
longtime zoo supporter and Minnesota House of Representatives member Willard
Munger. The
zoo commemorates Willard's dedication and support of not only the zoo, but also the
environment, conservation, and education. Due in large part to his staunch support of the
zoo it has gone from a local menagerie to a first class zoo of which Duluth and the entire
region can take pride.
Willard passed away on July 11, 1999, but his legacy will live on in many ways, one of which
will be the Willard Munger Animal Care Center at his beloved Lake Superior Zoo. Per
Willard's request, people are sending memorials to the Society in his name for use in
conservation, education, and protecting the environment. The Lake Superior Zoological
Society is proud to announce the Willard Munger Conservation Fund. For more information on the Willard Munger Animal Care
