     Volunteer at the zoo

There are many ways you can support the zoo! Whether it be a donation to one of our funds, volunteering, or buying a membership, everything helps us spread the conservation message.

Northern Lights Chapter of the
American Association of Zookeepers (AAZK)

The Northern Lights Chapter of AAZK was established under the national organization to promote zookeeping as a career, support conservation projects, and establish communication with others of our profession. We are a small team including zookeepers and education staff.

The money we raise is used to support the national Volunteer at Lake Superior ZooAAZK in various causes. We also send chapter members to professional conferences and contribute to local, national, and international conservation efforts. For example, in 1999, we donated funds to a zoo in Texas during a flood crisis. We are also paying the salary of a zookeeper in Madagascar, at Parc Ivoloinia, who otherwise would not be able to support his family. Our chapter also purchased red worms to start a
Volunteer in Duluth Minnesota vermiculture pile. We hope to reduce zoo waste and turn some zoo doo into a profitable compost.

Raising and contributing funds is an integral part of the AAZK mission. To donate or inquire about membership to the Northern Lights Chapter of AAZK, please call the zoo at, (218) 723-3854, and ask for Wendy W. or Jill, use our request information form, or send us an e-mail.
